I don't know if this is still the case or not, but it used to be (and it might still be) that putting MochiAds in a Newsgrounds game resulted in a lot of 1star votes because (AFAIK) people disliked ads in the games they played. Make great games, and the rest will probably work itself out over time. When we started PopCap, it wasn't to get rich but to make games for everyone (which was something almost no one was doing). Notch didn't start out to make a billion dollar franchise, but just created a great game he wanted to play and see made. This is one way that we grew PopCap business many years ago.Īs for the theory of just making great games: that's the best possible focus you can have. Captain Forever was really great like that.Īs for advertising, there are many non villainous advertising partners out there, and of course you could get a sponsor if you had lots of traffic.Īnother way to make money off of a free experience, is make such a popular or good one that someone else pays for the right to put it on phone or another platform.

One route would be to make it mostly free, but have a few features for pay, that add something to the game and allow people to pay for that. That would be tough, and I've never heard of a sustainable lifestyle from that. I'm not sure pure donations could sustain a lifestyle.
